Builder of the Month - A Passion for Excellence
When Tony DiVergilio, founder of Anthony Development Corporation, began building custom homes nearly 10 years ago, he had much more experience in “quality” building practices than his age would indicate. Tony was raised around the construction trade. His father owned a large commercial masonry business. The company worked on numerous landmark buildings, including the Renaissance Center, Detroit General Hospital and the Greek Town Marketplace in downtown Detroit. Observing his father’s dedication to the highest standards of construction from an early age, Tony learned the value of going that extra step in providing a quality project for the customer. “My father was convinced that quality starts from the bottom up. He was from the old school and always said whatever you are going to do you have to be the best.”
Today, Anthony Development Corporation crafts each new custom home they build with the same devotion to detail and passion for excellence learned from his father. Every component in one of their homes is carefully assessed to assure maximum longevity and maximum satisfaction for the customer, long after the construction process is complete. Tony says, “At the level of homes we are building, we understand our customers’ demand for perfection and deliver on every project. Imperfection keeps me awake at night.”
Building longevity into a project may not be something readily apparent to a new homebuyer, but it’s important to Anthony Development Corporation. “You never know down the line when someone will ask who built this house and if the owners are happy with it. It pays off for us in reputation and additional business.”
Anthony Development Corporation’s (ADC) attention to detail seems extraordinary for a builder in today’s fast paced world. In addition to things that add to longevity, there are dozens of other measures taken to assure homeowner satisfaction as time goes on. For instance, ADC makes it a practice to bring in engineers to test the compaction ratios of the soils below the foundation to see if there are any areas that need extra compensation. They also use a great deal of steel reinforcement in basement walls. Tony states, “Just as a commercial contractor would build a skyscraper, yet the additional cost in a custom home is nominal. Simply put, my homes do not ‘settle’ because of the proactive approach we take.”
Inside the home, every hole, including electrical boxes in sealed to reduce air infiltration. The company believes too that quality insulation relates to both the quality of the insulating product and the installation process. As Tony puts it, “We super-insulate our homes, which not only adds fuel savings for the customer for years to come, but a good insulation job also reduces noise from outside and modulates inside sounds as well. My homes’ HVAC and electrical systems are operational early in the rough building stage. We literally regulate the temperature, humidity and lighting way before the finishes begin. It is a vital part of my interior finish product. Then again, I treat just about everything as vital. We prefer to build our homes far above the minimal standards required for residential construction.”
Tony gives much of the credit for quality in ADC homes to their suppliers and trades people working with the company. Over the years, Anthony Development Corporation has realized the value of maintaining good relationships with suppliers and trades people and they have been fortunate to work with many of the best in the business. Tony believes that this respect pays off in each project they build. “The trades people and suppliers have come to understand that I am extremely particular about every single item that goes into our homes and they deliver for us.”
Although the construction quality of each Anthony Development Corporation home is outstanding, the company’s dedication to helping their clients achieve their new home vision is also exceptional. Tony works diligently with both the client and the architect in developing the plan for each new home. And the communication doesn’t stop there. An ADC representative is in instant communication with the homeowner throughout the construction process. “To us, the customer is truly king,” Tony says. “Trust and honesty in this business is an absolute must. We make sure our customers are very comfortable and satisfied with their building experience.”
Anthony Development Corporation is fortunate to build mostly on a referral basis, concentrating in the Oakland County area. The homes they build are large, but the company is relatively small. Tony hopes it stays this way for as he says, “it makes managing the project hands-on.” In addition, Tony likes being directly involved with the client, and oversees much of the on-site activity himself.
